The Commercial Music Lab was founded in 2011 by Jenny Amaya, a musician, composer, and commercial music professor with a desire to offer more useful courses and training for commercial music students and professionals. The mission of The Commercial Music Lab is to provide high-quality, professional
and affordable training in all aspects of commercial music creation.
Jenny Amaya's educational background includes a traditional bachelor's degree in composition, a MIDI and audio recording certificate, and a master's degree in commercial music. She is proficient on a handful of musical instruments and has studied the accordion. As a composer, Jenny has written music for a variety of instruments and ensembles, including music for short films. Her original wind band compositions have won several young composer competitions and awards.
In addition to helping industry professionals with their music, Jenny has worked as a copyist for Royal Caribbean Productions, Simply Music, KIDiddles, and the Corona Symphony Orchestra.
Jenny has been teaching music software for most of her life, beginning with onstage clinics at the NAMM Show for Passport Designs, the makers of Encore,
in 1995. Her love of notation and music software led her to a position as an ambassador for Sibelius USA in 2001. Over the years, Jenny has worked countless trade shows and conventions for Sibelius, and she began teaching Sibelius-sponsored training clinics and in-services in 2007. Jenny was offered her first college-level teaching position at Riverside Community College in 2006 (teaching Digital Performer and MIDI recording), followed by teaching assignments as a Sibelius Instructor for UCLA Extension in 2007, and as a Pro Tools and Digital Audio instructor at Riverside Community College, Mt. San Jacinto College, and Mira Costa College. In the Fall of 2012, Jenny joined the full time faculty in Music Industry Studies at Cal Poly Pomona.
After finishing her formal education in music, Jenny completed audio training
and expert-level Pro Tools certification at The Recording Arts Center in San Diego, CA. In 2009 Jenny joined the ranks of an elite group of Avid Certified Instructors, teaching Pro Tools certified curriculum at Avid Certified locations in Southern California. She was chosen,
after a world-wide search, to be the Sibelius author at Lynda.com. In 2013,
Jenny was designated as the first Avid Sibelius Master Trainer, authoring both of Avid's Sibelius
training books, Sibelius 101 and Sibelius 110, and training all of Avid's Certified Sibelius Instructors.
After three years of university-level teaching at Cal Poly Pomona, Jenny left her teaching assignment to join an incredible team of music education technologists at MusicFirst, where she was the west coast Education Manager for two years. She has now found her permanent full-time home as an Assistant Professor of Music, in charge of all music technology, at Riverside City College.
Jenny regularly receives training inquiries from musicians around the world. The Commercial Music Lab makes it possible for her to accommodate everyone with all of the equipment and space necessary to properly learn music software and commercial music skills. Jenny can also be found presenting music technology sessions at some of the top music conferences and trade shows in America, including NAMM, TMEA, The Midwest Clinic, NAfME and CASMEC.
